About Manchester:
From textiles to trees

Manchester (population 545,000) has grown like an oak tree into the Greater Manchester of today (population 3.2million). Landscape wise it’s bordered by the Pennines to the north and the Cheshire Plains to the south.
Its fortunes changed from the acorn of a minor Lancastrian town to the mighty oak of an economic hub and powerhouse during the industrial revolution.
The growth of the textile manufacturing industry saw massive unplanned growth. Factories and densely packed housing filled the landscape. Like a season in nature this has now changed.

Care for green spaces in Manchester

The economic decline of Manchester in the mid 20th century was followed in the 1990’s by a forward looking culture, gentrification of many wards, care for green spaces and the associated rising property prices. (The Manchester United effect has certainly helped too).

Well planned commercial and domestic arboriculture and horticulture are pushing up property values and quality of life.

Manchester now has six designated LNRs – Local Nature Reserves: Highfield Country Park – Levenshulme, Boggart Hole in Charlestown, Chorlton Water Park, Blackley Forest, Clayton Vale and Chorlton Ees and Ivy Green.

The Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens in Didsbury, South Manchester, are also worth looking up.

Manchester City Council

The local authority have several useful sections on trees for homeowners on the official website https://secure.manchester.gov.uk/

Just type ‘trees’ or ‘tree protection order’ into the search bar.
