Once a tree has been cut down in a safe manner, the remaining trunk and roots will eventually die and decay, however this can take up precious time that you may not want to waste by waiting around for mother nature. Removing a tree stump, however, is no easy task.

A popular method, usually seen in films, is hooking the stump up to a pickup truck and stepping on the gas. This is a bad idea as it has been known to cause serious damage to cars whilst having virtually no effect on the stump itself.

Here at Ashley Tree Services, we’ve put together our top three ways to safely remove your tree stump!

  1. Chemicals

You can purchase chemical products at garden centres which assist in the rotting of dead tree stumps. Products high in nitrogen will produce bacterial growth that will facilitate the gradual decay of the stump, making it easier to remove. It is very important to keep pets and children away whilst the chemicals are present.

  1. Manual

If a tree stump is not too large, you can dig it out manually. Do not attempt to remove it in one go, instead dig a trench around the stump and expose as many roots as you can. Do not dig too close to the stump. After that, cut through the major roots, loosen the soil around the stump and pry it out.
