Like Manchester (6.9 miles away) Oldham was part of the boom in the textile industry during the industrial revolution. Today things are very different. There are more than 30 green spaces and parks to visit. There’s no shortage of tree and garden inspiration. They’re listed on the Oldham council website (including the English Heritage listed Alexandra Park on the Kings Road) (if you’re more into nature than Oldham Athletic of course!)

Visitoldham.com have called Oldham the ‘Gateway to the Penines’ – there is so much natural beauty literally on the door step. For an echo of the past and a glimpse of the future there’s Jubilee Colliery Nature Reserve on Shaw Rd. It’s a living picture of how trees, mosses, ferns and fungi can soften a previously industrial landscape. You may get some landscape gardening inspiration.

Old trees

And there’s no shortage of arboriculture inspiration either. Dunham Massey Hall and Dunham Park (part of the National Trust Dunham Park Estate) has oak tree woodland dating back to the 17th century. It’s an impressive site if you’re interested in tree management and said to be the only place with such a concentration of old trees in the north west of England.
